The town has attracted thousands of visitors over the years to experience various Groundhog Day events and activities on February 2. The movie "Groundhog Day" from 1993, starring comedian Bill Murray, made Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania famous worldwide.

Valentines Day is a time to celebrate romance and love and kissy-face fealty. But the origins of this festival of candy and cupids are actually dark, bloody - and a bit muddled. The ancient Romans may be responsible for the name of our modern day of love. Emperor Claudius II executed two men - both named Valentine - on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentines Day. Today, the holiday is big business... Valentines Day sales are expected to total $18.6 billion.
Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival as it?s been called since the 20th century, remains the most important social and economic holiday in China. Originally tied to the lunar-solar Chinese calendar, the holiday was a time to honor household and heavenly deities as well as ancestors. It was also a time to bring family together for feasting. With the popular adoption in China of the Western calendar in 1912, the Chinese joined in celebrating January 1 as New Year's Day. China, however, continues to celebrate the traditional Chinese New Year, although in a shorter version with a new name?the Spring Festival. 2018 is the Year of the Dog, for all you Chinese Restaurant placemat observers.

Holiday drinks were on the menu at most of the local watering holes and island hotels and rental homes were filled to capacity. On Saturday Night, there was a traditional parade of Christmas floats that meandered through the downtown area and on Sunday the Christmas themed car parade excited and delighted island visitors young and old. Organizers are pleased to report two significant enhancements in the 2018 race program: the airport course will be expanded from the current .8 mile configuration to approximately 1.2 miles, and also the racing activity will likely be expanded from the present "Tuesday only" event to a race schedule that would begin early Monday afternoon and run a full day on Tuesday.
